A 39-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred this spring at a large encampment located at a Highway 1 park and ride.
Details of the Incident
Shortly after 11 p.m. on March 23, Abbotsford police responded to reports of a shooting at the Whatcom Road Park & Ride. Wayne Versfelt, 69, of Abbotsford, later succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained in the incident. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed that the shooting stemmed from an isolated dispute between two individuals who were acquainted with each other.
Arrest and Charges
On Saturday, homicide investigators arrested Jared Yake, a 39-year-old resident of Abbotsford. He has since been charged with manslaughter with a firearm in relation to Versfelt's death. In a statement released Monday, IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong emphasized that the victim and the accused knew each other and characterized the shooting as an isolated event.
“Anytime there is gun violence, it can leave residents feeling shaken and concerned for their safety, and it is particularly troubling and impactful when it occurs around the most vulnerable members of our community,” Fong said. “IHIT investigators remained committed to uncovering the truth, and it is our hope that the laying of this charge represents a step toward closure for the victim’s loved ones and the community.”
Background on the Encampment
The Whatcom Road site has been used for years by a large number of individuals experiencing homelessness, who have occupied much of the lot with tents, RVs, and other structures. The City of Abbotsford has criticized the camp as a public safety concern but noted that it is situated on provincially managed land, where municipal bylaws do not apply. The city has been urging federal and provincial leaders to address the ongoing situation.
