Halton Police Investigate Cell Phone Pickpocket Ring at Toronto Premium Outlets
Halton Regional Police are investigating a series of pickpocket thefts targeting shoppers at the Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills, Ontario. Since mid-November 2024, authorities have received reports of 104 incidents involving cell phones being lost or stolen while patrons were shopping within the outlet mall.
Investigators have released security footage of a reported theft to alert the public and provide a visual example of how these crimes are committed. According to police, suspects typically operate in teams of two or more individuals. They watch for unsuspecting shoppers using their cell phones, then follow them until an opportunity arises. One suspect will bump or rub against the victim, simultaneously reaching into an unsecured jacket pocket to steal the phone. The stolen device is quickly handed off to a second suspect, completing the theft in mere seconds.
Preventative Theft Tips
Halton police are working to solve these thefts and offer the following tips to help the public protect against pickpockets:
- Secure your phone in a fastened inside jacket pocket or pouch when not in use.
- Maintain a tight grip or control of your phone when in crowded spaces.
- Never leave your phone unattended.
- Maintain awareness of your surroundings and watch for people who may be watching or following.
- Keep your phone secure and out of sight; only use it if necessary.
Police urge anyone who experiences theft or observes suspicious activity to immediately report it by calling 9-1-1 or the HRPS general line at 905-825-4777.
