Barrie police stopped a driver traveling at 157 km/h on Highway 400, nearly double the posted 80 km/h limit in a construction zone, according to a news release. The driver, whose name has not been released, was charged with stunt driving under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
Stunt Driving Charges and Penalties
The driver's vehicle was impounded for 14 days, and their license was suspended for 30 days. If convicted, they face a fine of up to $10,000, six demerit points, and a possible license suspension of up to two years. "Speeding in a construction zone puts workers and motorists at extreme risk," said Barrie Police Service in a statement.
Construction Zone Safety
The incident occurred in a construction zone on Highway 400 near Barrie, where workers were present. Ontario Provincial Police have noted that construction zone speeding is a persistent issue, with over 300 charges laid in the region this year alone. "We urge all drivers to slow down and obey posted speed limits, especially in construction zones," added the police statement.
Community Response
Local residents expressed concern over reckless driving. "It's terrifying to think someone would drive that fast near workers," said Barrie resident Sarah Thompson. Police continue to investigate and remind the public to report dangerous driving.
