The poll numbers sting. They should sting if you support Alberta separating from Canada. Two recent surveys reveal a large majority of Albertans remain opposed to leaving the country.
In the Postmedia-Leger poll, 68 percent favor staying in Canada, while only 24 percent support a Yes or No vote on independence. The Ipsos poll is even more stark: 72 percent to 19 percent for remaining in Canada.
Separatists Spinning Their Wheels
It appears the Alberta separatist movement is not gaining ground and may be heading in reverse. Cory Morgan, a longtime advocate for independence, posed a pointed question after the polls were released: "I wonder what the independence support numbers would be if the primary group representing the independence movement actually decided to start campaigning on the issue."
Morgan notes that while some make noise on social media, they are not winning new hearts and minds. He has been actively hustling for the cause, writing a book, distributing lawn signs, and putting up billboards to sway undecided voters.
Blame Game Targets Premier Smith
Some separatists have already chosen a scapegoat: Premier Danielle Smith. Smith has been campaigning for the pro-Canada side, praising Prime Minister Mark Carney and recently stating that setting up Alberta as its own country would cost around $400 billion. She is consulting experts to determine the full price tag and frequently references Brexit as a cautionary tale.
The loudest separatist voices tend to talk among themselves and preach to the choir, but they struggle with those who question them. As the numbers show, their tent is not getting bigger.
