Anita Grayson, a 75-year-old grandmother from Fort Wayne, Indiana, died following a violent confrontation at a local Tim Hortons outlet after she was dissatisfied with her drive-thru order. The incident, captured on surveillance video, has sparked controversy and misinformation online.
Altercation Details
According to reports, Grayson entered the coffee shop shortly after 8 a.m. on May 13, furious about her order. She allegedly began berating a 17-year-old female employee, shouting and pointing. The 20-year-old shift manager intervened and asked Grayson to leave, but the situation escalated.
Video footage shows Grayson pushing the manager, then punching her in the face with enough force to leave scratches and knock off her glasses. The manager pushed back, and Grayson allegedly shoved her hand in the young woman's face, leading to a chaotic struggle.
Police stated: "Ms. Grayson then grabbed the shift lead by the hair and pulled her to the ground and rolled on top of her. The shift lead can be seen swatting at Grayson's arm as she is being held by her hair."
Two other employees attempted to separate them but struggled to free the manager's hair from Grayson's grip. During the struggle, Grayson pulled out a chunk of the manager's hair, leaving a raw area on her scalp.
Aftermath and Death
After the fight ended, the employees returned to work while Grayson sat down and made a phone call. Ten minutes later, she lay down on the floor. Police responded to a 911 call about an assault, but Grayson was unresponsive. Emergency personnel transported her to the hospital, where she later died.
Grayson's daughter, Tawnda, revealed that her mother had been wearing a heart monitor and suffered from congestive heart failure. She expressed outrage, saying: "You should not enter a coffee shop for a coffee and a doughnut and come out 'unalived.' That is diabolical."
Tawnda criticized the employees' actions: "That's the elderly lady. That's not how we treat our senior citizens. We be careful with them. We make sure that they're alright. We don't jump on them and attack them. And scare them to death."
Police Response and Misinformation
The incident triggered a wave of rumors on social media, with some clips showing only the fight and Grayson lying on the ground, omitting the context. Police released the full surveillance footage to counter what they called "a dangerously false narrative."
While the coroner has not officially ruled on the cause of death, early findings indicate that none of Grayson's injuries from the altercation contributed to her death. The investigation continues.
