A weapons incident in east-end Cornwall on Wednesday afternoon has left one person dead and another seriously injured. The Cornwall Police Service responded to a call just after 12:30 p.m., leading to a lockdown of a section of the area.
Police Response and Scene Security
By 2:30 p.m., police had secured the scene and located a person suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. The individual was transported to hospital for treatment. Several hours later, officers discovered a deceased person who died from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victim was identified on Thursday as a 48-year-old man from Cornwall.
Investigation Underway
The investigation is being handled by the Cornwall police’s criminal investigations division. Photos shared on social media showed officers deployed to 1150 Montreal Rd., a building that currently houses several businesses on its ground floor and a residential unit on its second floor. The Standard-Freeholder, a prior tenant, had its office in the building from 2010 to 2020. The building was previously the administration office for Courtaulds Canada until the plant closed in the mid-1990s.
Impact on Local Schools
École secondaire publique l’Héritage and St. Lawrence College, both located west of the area on Montreal Road, as well as other schools along Second Street West north of the area, were placed in lockdown as a precaution. Students were safely escorted from l’Héritage around the usual dismissal time. The lockdowns were lifted once the scene was secured.
Further details about the incident are expected as the investigation continues.
