The council's vote on Wednesday was overwhelmingly in favor of the redevelopment plan, concluding a lengthy consultation process with the MLSE Foundation. However, the decision has been met with disappointment from segments of the community who value the arena's long-standing hockey legacy. A city staff report justified the demolition by citing necessary repairs exceeding $15 million, stating the building no longer meets modern standards for inclusive programming. The MLSE Foundation has committed to leading the estimated $25-million revitalization, transforming the site into a youth-focused hub offering free sports programming, life skills development, and academic support.

With the Weston Lions Club's lease set to expire at the end of March 2026, the clock is ticking for the local hockey community. City officials confirm that plans are actively being developed to relocate the Weston Minor Hockey League to other arenas in the area.
