A significant fire erupted at a west Edmonton apartment building on Thursday evening, resulting in approximately $1.2 million in property damages. The blaze occurred at the Ruby Plaza apartment complex, located near 101 Avenue and 162 Street, and was reported at 5:34 p.m. Fire crews responded swiftly, with 11 units arriving on the scene by 5:38 p.m. The fire was declared under control by 7:18 p.m. and fully extinguished by 8:19 p.m., according to a representative from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) in an email to Postmedia on Friday morning.
Windy Conditions Complicated Firefighting Efforts
EFRS noted that strong winds on Thursday played a significant role in making the fire more difficult to extinguish. The challenging weather conditions required additional resources and strategic positioning to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent structures. Despite the intensity of the fire, no injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.
Displacement and Support for Residents
The fire displaced 40 people from their homes. The emergency response team provided immediate support, and as of Friday, 31 individuals are being assisted by the Canadian Red Cross. The organization is helping with temporary accommodation, food, and other essential needs. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by EFRS.
Firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze, and their efforts were commended by local officials. The Ruby Plaza apartment building sustained extensive damage, and the estimated $1.2 million in damages covers structural repairs and loss of personal property. Residents are advised to contact their insurance providers and seek assistance from community support services.
This incident highlights the importance of fire safety measures, especially during adverse weather conditions. EFRS encourages all residents to have working smoke detectors and an evacuation plan in place.
