The City of Toronto has announced plans to open thousands of public washrooms, water fountains, and pools ahead of the summer season. The initiative aims to improve accessibility and convenience for residents and tourists alike.
Expanding Public Amenities
In a press release, city officials stated that over 2,000 public washrooms, 1,500 water fountains, and 200 pools will be operational by June. This represents a significant increase from previous years, with a focus on underserved neighborhoods.
Community Benefits
Mayor Olivia Chow highlighted the importance of these amenities for public health and comfort. "Access to clean water and sanitation is a basic right," she said. "We want everyone to enjoy our parks and public spaces without worry."
The city will also extend hours at select locations and increase maintenance crews to ensure cleanliness. Additionally, new signage will help users locate facilities easily.
Funding for the expansion comes from the city's capital budget and provincial grants. Officials estimate the annual operating cost at $15 million.
Residents can expect a smoother summer experience with these enhancements, supporting outdoor activities and community gatherings.
