Teen, Man Charged After Crash Injures 82-Year-Old

A 14-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man have been charged following a dramatic car crash that left an 82-year-old man hospitalized with critical injuries in Saskatoon.

Incident Details

According to Saskatoon police, officers received a call around 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday regarding a Dodge Durango being driven erratically near 58th Street West and Idylwyld Drive. Prior to that, RCMP had received reports starting around 8 a.m. about a black Durango driving dangerously on Highway 11, north of Saskatoon. The call was transferred to Corman Park police, who located the SUV and attempted to pull it over.

Instead of stopping, the SUV fled at high speed into Saskatoon, traveling through a ditch and into heavy traffic before colliding with a Ford Transit van. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles, according to the provincial justice ministry. The collision occurred south of the Highway 16 overpass on Idylwyld Drive.

Rescue and Charges

A Corman Park officer arrested the driver of the Durango. With help from an RCMP member, they pulled the 82-year-old man from the van, which had caught fire. The elderly man, the sole occupant of the van, was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

Police have charged the 14-year-old boy and the 24-year-old man with possession of stolen property over $5,000. The teen also faces charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failure to stop after a collision, and evading police. The 24-year-old is additionally charged with breaching conditions.

Investigation

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been deployed to investigate the incident. According to the Ministry of Justice, the investigation will examine the actions of police during the incident. Saskatoon police will investigate the actions of those in the stolen vehicle.
