Overnight Silverado Fire Displaces Three, Damages Garages

An overnight fire in Calgary's southwest neighbourhood of Silverado has left three people displaced and caused significant damage to a home and multiple garages. The blaze broke out on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in the 200 block of Silverado Drive S.W., prompting a large response from the Calgary Fire Department.

Firefighters Respond to Early Morning Blaze

Fire crews were called to the scene around 12:10 a.m. and were met with a large plume of smoke and visible flames emerging from behind a two-storey home with a detached garage, according to Alex Kwan, the department's public information officer. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had already spread to some neighbouring garages.

“Our crews deployed multiple hand lines to start knocking down that fire and limit the spread,” Kwan said. Crews were also sent to the alley side to help tame the flames. A total of 44 firefighters and 16 fire apparatus were deployed to the neighbourhood.

Occupants Evacuated Safely

The three occupants of the home had already evacuated before firefighters arrived, and one of them had called the department. No injuries have been reported. However, the home and two nearby garages are damaged beyond occupancy. There was also some external damage to neighbouring garages.

Residents living in the affected home will be unable to return until after repairs are completed. The neighbouring homes are safe to live in, as the damage was only exterior.

Investigation Underway

A fire investigator has begun investigating the incident. “It does look like it originated around one of the garage areas,” Kwan added. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
