A man is facing multiple charges after fleeing from police in Barrie on July 4, 2026, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The incident occurred in the early evening hours when officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.

Details of the Incident

The OPP reported that the driver initially pulled over but then sped away as officers approached. A brief pursuit ensued, lasting approximately 10 minutes, before the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Police established a perimeter and, with the assistance of a canine unit, located the man hiding in a nearby backyard. He was arrested without further incident.

According to OPP spokesperson Constable Mark Baxter, the 34-year-old suspect is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing scheduled for July 6 in Barrie.

Impact and Safety Concerns

No injuries were reported during the pursuit, and no property damage occurred. The OPP reminded the public that fleeing from police poses significant risks to both the suspect and the community. “This type of behaviour is extremely dangerous and will not be tolerated,” said Constable Baxter. “We are grateful that no one was hurt.”
