Man, 27, gunned down near his North York home

A 27-year-old man was gunned down just steps from his home in North York on Friday night, prompting a homicide investigation and a search for three suspects.

Toronto Police responded to the deadly shooting near Sheppard Avenue West and Magellan Drive — just east of Jane Street — around 10:15 p.m. The victim was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“By all accounts, this gentleman was steps from his home,” Homicide Detective Sergeant Jason Davis told reporters Saturday afternoon outside 31 Division.

Police say the victim was in his 20s, but his name has not been released pending notification of family. Davis said “several” shots were fired, and the suspects fled in a dark-coloured vehicle. Three individuals were seen fleeing the scene.

“I have no indication whatsoever that he had any interactions with the suspects at this point in time,” Davis said. “I will tell you the vehicle pulled up — the suspects were out on foot when the incident occurred.”

No further descriptions of the suspects were available Saturday, and investigators are canvassing the area for video footage and witnesses.

Davis urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of even small details. “This 27-year-old man tragically lost his life last night and every little bit of information matters.”

The shooting comes just days after another incident in the same neighbourhood. Around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, gunshots were reported at a townhouse complex near Sheppard Avenue West and Jane Street. Officers found damage to a window but no injuries.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred a few nights ago as well,” Davis said. “At this point in time, it is far too early in the investigation to say whether or not they are connected.”

Police are working to restore a sense of safety in the community. Anyone with information about Friday's murder is urged to call the Homicide Unit at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
