Mayor Farkas Appoints Ex-Rival Thiessen, Stamps Legend Cornish to Advisory Council
Farkas names new advisory council, shuffles senior staff

In a significant move for his administration, Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has announced a reshuffle of his senior office staff and unveiled a new roster for his Mayor's Advisory Council, which notably includes a former political opponent and a local sports icon.

New Leadership and Strategic Appointments

The changes, announced on Monday, January 12, 2026, see Zoe Addington stepping into the pivotal role of chief of staff for the mayor's office. She replaces John Larsen, who is transitioning to a new position.

Mayor Farkas praised Addington's extensive background in public policy and executive leadership. "Zoe brings extensive experience in public policy and executive leadership, and I'm grateful she has chosen to join Team Calgary," Farkas stated. "She is a steady, experienced leader who understands how to move complex priorities forward—while keeping Calgarians at the centre of the work."

Addington's resume includes serving as deputy chief of staff to the late Premier Jim Prentice, director of policy at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, and most recently, as an assistant deputy minister within the Alberta government.

Advisory Council Gains High-Profile Members

With Addington's arrival, outgoing chief of staff John Larsen will take on the role of chair for the Mayor's Advisory Council. This body is tasked with providing strategic insight and community perspectives to inform the mayor and city council's decisions.

"The Mayor's Advisory Council is an important forum for listening, learning, and bringing practical advice from across our city," Farkas explained. "It connects the mayor's office to real-world experience, from business and community leadership to public service and civic innovation."

The newly appointed members of the council bring a diverse range of expertise and public profiles:

  • Brian Thiessen: A Calgary business leader, lawyer, and community builder who finished fifth in the city's October mayoral race.
  • Jon Cornish: A finance professional, former Calgary Stampeders running back, and celebrated community leader.
  • Heather Forsyth: A longtime civic leader and former public servant.
  • Katie Smith-Parent: A recognized community advocate and social impact leader.
  • Carol Ryder: A respected civic volunteer and community champion.
  • Adam Legge: A prominent voice in economic development and business leadership.

"I'm grateful to these Calgarians for stepping forward to serve," Farkas said of the appointees. "Their perspective and advice strengthens our ability to make better decisions, build trust, and keep our city focused on the outcomes that matter most."

Additional Staff Transitions

The announcement also covered other changes within the mayor's office team. John Larsen, who recently served as Farkas's campaign manager during the fall municipal election, will be departing to complete a manuscript for a book under contract with HarperCollins Canada, scheduled for release later this year.

Furthermore, Michael Solberg, the deputy chief of staff, will be concluding his work with the mayor's office. He is set to return to his position as a partner with his consulting firm.

These strategic appointments and staff changes signal Mayor Farkas's intent to incorporate a wide array of voices and experiences into his governance approach, blending political, business, athletic, and community leadership to guide Calgary's future.
