How to Spot Fake Canadian Money
To protect the public from falling victim to this scam, police have shared crucial tips for verifying the authenticity of banknotes, with a specific focus on features found on the $20 bill that are common across newer polymer notes.
First, feel the bill. Genuine currency has raised ink that you can feel with your finger, particularly on the large number and the words "Bank of Canada."
Next, tilt the note. Look for a metallic portrait and building images that appear to move as you change the viewing angle. You should also see a detailed metallic portrait inside the large, clear window.
Finally, check with light. Holding the bill up to a light source will reveal hidden numbers and patterns that are not visible under normal conditions.
LaSalle Police Host Counterfeit Detection Session
In response to what they describe as a "growing trend" of fake money in the area, the LaSalle Police Service is hosting a free public information session.
This event is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Vollmer Complex, located at 2121 Laurier Parkway in LaSalle.
The session will feature a currency-fraud specialist from the Windsor Family Credit Union, who will provide practical, hands-on advice for business owners, their staff, and any concerned citizens on how to detect counterfeit bills effectively.
If you encounter a bill you believe is counterfeit, police advise against confronting the individual. Instead, safely note their physical description and the descriptions of any companions, and contact the police immediately.
