An Ottawa city councillor has strongly criticized the Department of National Defence's (DND) proposal to create additional parking at the Carling Campus in Ottawa's west end, arguing that converting green space into parking lots is not an acceptable solution to the parking shortage. The plan comes in response to complaints from staff about a lack of parking spaces as public servants increasingly return to in-office work.
Concerns Over Green Space Loss
The councillor emphasized that the conversion of green areas into parking lots would have negative environmental impacts and reduce the quality of life for residents and workers in the area. 'Turning green space into parking is not the answer,' the councillor stated, urging the DND to explore alternative solutions such as improved public transit options, carpooling incentives, or the use of remote parking with shuttle services.
Staff Complaints and Office Return
The parking shortage at the Carling Campus has been a growing issue as federal employees spend more time working on-site. The DND's plan aims to address these complaints, but the councillor argues that more sustainable approaches should be prioritized. The proposal has sparked a broader debate about urban planning and the balance between development and environmental preservation in Ottawa.
The councillor also called for greater community consultation before any final decisions are made, stressing the importance of involving local residents and stakeholders in the planning process. The DND has yet to respond publicly to the criticism, but the issue is expected to be discussed at upcoming city council meetings.
