Calgary Seeks Public Input on Westbrook Station Area Master Plan
Calgary Seeks Public Input on Westbrook Station Plan

The City of Calgary is offering residents the opportunity to provide input on the future of the Westbrook Station area through a master plan, with public engagement meetings scheduled for this month.

Master Plan Details

The master plan for the city-owned land surrounding Westbrook Station will determine how Calgary integrates new housing, commercial spaces, public areas, and transit connections. This initiative is a key component of the Westbrook Communities Local Area Plan, a council-approved policy guiding land use and development in the community.

Improvements along 37th Street S.W. and 17th Avenue S.W. are already underway, with ongoing development around the site's edges.

Community Vision

Ward 8 Coun. Nathaniel Schmidt emphasized the community's desire to activate the space. “It’s one of those rare issues, where in talking to people in Ward 8, and I know Ward 6 has a similar feeling, where they just want something to happen,” Schmidt said. “Put some park space, some public space, some businesses that really create a gathering place in a spot that people can use, even if you’re not getting on the train.”

The site boasts a mix of public and private amenities, ample size, and an underground CTrain station, all of which support its transformation into a vibrant hub.

Public Engagement Opportunities

The master plan is in its initial stage, seeking public feedback on how to best utilize the space. On Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., the city will host a drop-in open house at the Glendale Meadows Community, where attendees can learn about site opportunities and challenges, meet the project team, and share their opinions. On June 24, a registered 90-minute engagement session will begin at 7 p.m.

More information and registration are available at www.westbrookstation.ca. Schmidt added, “We also have a fun map on the Westbrook website, where people could leave feedback and put little place markers about what they would like to see get built.”

Project Timeline

Schmidt anticipates the area will become a city hub but stresses the importance of community input. The city attempted to advance the plan a decade ago but faced delays due to land ownership issues. “(The city) got that land back in 2024 and now we’ve taken the steps to really accelerate something that will hopefully work a lot better this time,” Schmidt said. “We’re meeting with the team once a month to see what the progress is, and to really set the stage for this to get shovels in the ground before this term of council is up.”

Planning applications are scheduled from this year through 2027, followed by land sales and development permits from 2027 to 2029, with construction planned for 2029 to 2030.
