A devastating fire in Coquitlam's Maillardville neighbourhood has left one person dead and three homes destroyed. The blaze broke out Tuesday afternoon, quickly spreading through the residential area and engulfing multiple properties.
Firefighters Respond to Blaze
Fire crews arrived on scene to find heavy flames consuming the structures. Despite their efforts, the fire had already claimed one life. The victim's identity has not been released pending notification of family.
According to fire officials, the fire began in one home and spread to adjacent houses due to the close proximity of the buildings and windy conditions. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
Community Impact
The Maillardville neighbourhood is a historic area in Coquitlam, known for its older homes and tight-knit community. Residents were evacuated as a precaution, and emergency services established a temporary shelter for those displaced.
“This is a tragic event for our community,” said a Coquitlam fire department spokesperson. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim, and we are providing support to those affected.”
Investigation Underway
The fire marshal's office is leading the investigation, with assistance from local police. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been accidental, but all possibilities are being explored.
Damage estimates are not yet available, but the destruction of three homes represents a significant loss for the neighbourhood. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
