Toronto woman charged with hate-motivated harassment of youths on TTC
Woman charged with hate crimes on Toronto transit

Toronto police have made an arrest in what investigators are calling a hate-motivated harassment case targeting youth on the city's transit system. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Genevieve Reist of Toronto, faces criminal harassment charges following two separate incidents that occurred on TTC buses in North York.

Two separate incidents reported

The investigation began on September 15, 2025, when officers responded to a harassment complaint in the Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West area. According to police reports, three young victims were aboard a TTC bus when a woman approached them and began making harassing comments.

At the time, authorities were searching for a female suspect described as having blond hair and wearing a beanie hat. The case took another turn on October 31, 2025, when police received another call about an alleged hate crime in the same general vicinity.

In this second incident, a youth was riding a TTC bus when a woman boarded, engaged with the young person, and again made harassing comments. The suspect exited the bus at Bathurst Street and Laurelcrest Avenue, just south of Sheppard Avenue West.

Police investigation leads to arrest

After thorough investigation, police determined the same woman was responsible for both occurrences. On November 11, 2025, investigators released an image of an unidentified suspect to the public, hoping someone would recognize her and come forward with information.

The strategy proved successful when, just three days later on November 14, 2025, police arrested Reist. She now faces formal criminal harassment charges and is scheduled to appear in court on December 17, 2025.

Police have confirmed they believe both incidents were motivated by hate, though specific details about the nature of the comments or the targeted groups haven't been publicly disclosed.

Ongoing investigation and public appeal

Toronto Police continue to investigate the case and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Authorities have provided multiple ways for the public to assist with the investigation.

Witnesses or anyone with relevant information can contact Toronto Police directly at 416-808-3500 or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The arrest comes amid growing concerns about safety on public transit and hate-motivated incidents in the city. Police have emphasized their commitment to investigating all hate-related crimes thoroughly and ensuring perpetrators are held accountable.
