Family of Slain Windsor Woman Accuses Police of Ignoring Prior Threats
The family of Nancy Grewal, a 45-year-old personal support worker stabbed to death in Windsor, Ontario, has publicly accused local police of failing to take earlier threats against her life more seriously. In a heart-wrenching interview, her sister Alishaa Grewal expressed the family's ongoing anguish and uncertainty about the motive behind the brutal attack.
Unanswered Questions and a Painful Loss
Nancy Grewal was attacked outside a client's home on Todd Lane in LaSalle around 9:30 p.m. on March 3, 2024. She was working alone at the time and suffered multiple stab wounds before paramedics rushed her to the hospital, where she later died. Alishaa Grewal, 36, described the family's shock and grief, stating they initially feared an accident but never imagined a fatal stabbing until police delivered the devastating news.
"The police told us she's gone, that someone stabbed and killed her. What we've suffered … I can't explain that," Alishaa said. "The scary part is that she was stabbed by someone … that painful death. I can't stop thinking how much pain she felt, what she was thinking in her last moment, what she wanted to tell us. These questions are on my mind."
Possible Political or Personal Motives
The family remains in the dark about whether the killing was politically motivated or an act of personal revenge. Nancy Grewal, who immigrated to Canada from India in 2018, was an active social media user and an outspoken critic of the Khalistan Indian separatist movement. Alishaa noted that her sister's vocal stance might have played a role, but emphasized that no clear motive has been established.
"There's a chance it was because she was very outspoken about the Khalistan Indian separatist movement," Alishaa explained. "Or maybe it was personal revenge. We still don't know. We are waiting for what police tell us."
History of Threats and Police Response
Prior to her death, Nancy Grewal had reported threats to her safety. In a rare English-language social media post on November 11, 2023, she detailed an incident where a man poured gasoline on her front door and attempted to set it on fire. She expressed fear for her life, stating, "I'm a Canadian citizen, but I don't feel safe in this country right now." Police have since released security footage of the attempted arson as part of the homicide investigation, seeking public assistance.
In the video, Grewal implied the attacker was linked to the Khalistan movement, saying, "I feel scared. He tried to give me a warning. 'Shut your mouth. Don't raise your voice about this topic.'" The family now questions why these earlier threats were not addressed more aggressively by authorities, potentially preventing the tragedy.
A Close Bond and Tragic Premonition
Alishaa described an incredibly close relationship with her sister, often video-calling up to 25 times a day. On the night of the murder, Alishaa had a gut feeling something was wrong when Nancy failed to answer repeated calls—a highly unusual occurrence. "She was never late," Alishaa recalled. "I called her so many times and she didn't pick up. That never happened."
The family's grief is compounded by the lack of answers and their perception of inadequate police action. As the investigation continues, they hope for clarity and justice, while mourning a woman remembered as brave and outspoken.
