Windsor Police Tactical Operation Ends Lengthy Byng Road Standoff
Windsor police have declined to confirm specific tactics used during a dramatic seven-hour standoff at a South Walkerville residence, but neighbors who witnessed the event believe tear gas was deployed before officers apprehended a suspect.
Neighbor Accounts Describe Tactical Show of Force
Thomas Patrick Tucker, who has lived in the area for approximately four years, told the Windsor Star he believes police resorted to tear gas during the operation. "I'm pretty sure they resorted to tear gas," Tucker stated. "Then when that was done, he was out in like five minutes. Then they took him away, and that was it."
Tucker described hearing what he believed were tear gas canisters being deployed: "I heard a couple of pops — that they were shooting tear gas into the house, and then shortly after that the guy was outside, quickly." He added, "I guess that tear gas really works, if that's what they used."
Massive Police Response to Explosive Incident
The incident began when multiple emergency personnel and vehicles converged on the 2300 block of Byng Road following reports of loud bangs in the neighborhood. The response included:
- A mobile command unit
- A tactical vehicle
- Windsor Fire and Rescue Services truck
- Ambulance services
- Several marked and unmarked police cruisers
A 35-year-old man, who allegedly detonated at least one explosive device on his front lawn earlier in the incident, was eventually arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief interfering with others' enjoyment of property.
Neighbors Witness Dramatic Police Operation
Katherine Kiss, a neighborhood resident for more than three decades, said she and her grandchildren had a front-row seat to the police operation from her home kitty-corner to the incident. "My grandson watched the whole day, hours and hours of negotiations," Kiss explained. "Then the SWAT team came and then they had drones and the person wasn't coming out. So all my grandchildren were watching through the window."
Tucker expressed surprise at the scale of Windsor's police capabilities: "I had no idea the city had all this equipment. That's pretty impressive, especially the SWAT team, eh? Just like on TV. Big black vehicle, they're all dressed in black, got the bulletproof vest on, their helmets on. Man ... they were ready to go."
Police Remain Tight-Lipped on Tactical Details
A Windsor police spokesman declined to confirm whether tear gas was used during the operation. "The Windsor Police Service does not comment on specific policing techniques during these kinds of situations," he stated.
Police confirmed that trained negotiators made multiple attempts to persuade the man to exit his home, but he refused to comply. Following the arrest, investigators executed a search warrant at the residence on Monday and seized several items as evidence.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
A section of Byng Road and the back alley from Vimy to Lorraine avenues was closed off overnight but reopened by police on Monday. Authorities have not disclosed how many residents were evacuated during the incident, stating only that the investigation continues.
The suspect has not been publicly identified by police as the case proceeds through the justice system.
