Windsor Crime Stats: Fraud Up, Overall Crime Down in January

Windsor Police Release January 2026 Crime Statistics: A Complex Picture Emerges

The Windsor Police Service has unveiled its crime statistics for January 2026, revealing a nuanced landscape of criminal activity across the region. While overall reported crimes show a promising downward trend, specific categories including fraud and assault have experienced concerning increases compared to the same period last year.

Overall Crime Trends Show Positive Movement

According to the latest data released in early February 2026, the Windsor area witnessed an 11.9 per cent decline in property crimes during January. The numbers dropped from 843 incidents in January 2025 to 743 occurrences this year. This encouraging trend encompasses both Windsor and Amherstburg, the two communities patrolled by Windsor police.

When examining property crimes more closely, the statistics reveal:

  • Theft incidents decreased by 16.1 per cent to 418 occurrences
  • Break and enter crimes fell by 30.4 per cent to 55 incidents
  • Overall property crimes dropped 12.2 per cent to 722 from 822

Concerning Increases in Specific Crime Categories

Despite the overall positive trends, several crime categories showed significant increases that have raised attention from law enforcement officials. The most notable spikes occurred in:

  1. Fraud cases, which jumped by 17 per cent to 167 incidents compared to 139 in January 2025
  2. Assault incidents, which increased by 9.1 per cent to 132 occurrences
  3. Threats or harassment crimes, which rose 5.7 per cent to 56 cases

These increases present a complex picture of crime in the region, suggesting that while property crimes are decreasing, certain violent and deceptive crimes require continued attention from law enforcement.

Diverging Trends Between Windsor and Amherstburg

The statistics reveal dramatically different patterns when comparing the two communities served by Windsor police. Amherstburg experienced a startling 175 per cent increase in crimes against people, with 22 incidents reported in January 2026. This breakdown includes:

  • 10 assault cases
  • 7 threats or harassment crimes
  • 4 sexual violations
  • 1 robbery

In contrast, Windsor saw a 9.6 per cent decrease in crimes against people, dropping from 208 incidents in January 2025 to 188 occurrences this year. The city's specific breakdown shows:

  • 122 reported assaults (up from 117)
  • 49 threats and harassment incidents (unchanged)
  • 10 sexual violation occurrences (down from 21)
  • 4 robberies (down from 12)

Additional Crime Categories Show Mixed Results

Other criminal code violations, which encompass a range of offenses including child pornography crimes, non-violent weapons offences, gaming and betting violations, and administration of justice infractions, showed a marginal decrease of 0.6 per cent. There were 157 such occurrences reported in January 2026.

The overall crimes against people category saw 210 incidents reported across both communities, representing a modest decrease of 2.8 per cent compared to the 216 figure for January 2025.

These statistics provide valuable insights for law enforcement planning and community safety initiatives, highlighting both areas of progress and categories requiring increased attention as Windsor police continue their work to protect residents across the region.
