Calgary police have announced additional charges in a troubling case of extortion targeting the southeast Asian community, with two more men now facing allegations related to shootings at a Saddle Ridge residence. This development brings the total number of charged individuals to three, as authorities intensify efforts to combat a broader pattern of such crimes in the city.
Details of the Saddle Ridge Incidents
The incidents occurred at a home located in the 8400 block of Saddleridge Drive N.E., where the property was shot at on two separate occasions: first on February 22 and again on March 4 of this year. According to police reports, three suspects in a vehicle were involved in these attacks, which are believed to be linked to extortion activities.
New Charges and Suspect Information
In a recent update, law enforcement officials have laid charges against two additional men in connection with the case. Karanbir Singh, aged 21, has been charged with one count of discharging a firearm with intent and is scheduled to appear in court today.
Meanwhile, Germanjeet Singh, also known as Garry, aged 22, is currently wanted on a warrant for the same offense. He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 198 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. Police have issued a public warning, urging anyone who sees him not to approach but to immediately call 911.
Investigation and Evidence
The breakthrough in identifying the suspects came during a routine traffic stop on March 7, when a vehicle was pulled over for a violation near the scene of the shooting. Investigators determined that this vehicle matched one seen at the home during the incidents, and subsequent examination uncovered evidence allegedly tying it to the extortion-related shootings.
This case is part of a larger trend, with Calgary police noting that there have been 41 extortion attempts in the city, 18 of which involved shootings at homes, businesses, or vehicles. In response to these crimes, authorities have referred 45 individuals to Canada Border Services for potential deportation due to their alleged involvement in extortion activities.
Broader Context and Community Impact
The targeting of the southeast Asian community in these extortion schemes has raised significant concerns. Jaskaran Singh, another 21-year-old from Calgary, was previously charged on April 3 with discharging a firearm with intent, highlighting the ongoing nature of these investigations.
As the legal proceedings advance, police continue to emphasize the seriousness of these offenses and their commitment to protecting vulnerable communities from such predatory crimes.
