Montreal police have made two arrests in connection with separate attempts to set fire to local businesses within a 24-hour period, highlighting a concerning trend of youth involvement in serious property crimes.
Early Morning Arrest with Gasoline Can
In the first incident, which occurred at 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual near a bar on Brunswick Boulevard in the Dollard-des-Ormeaux area. Police found and arrested a 19-year-old woman who was loitering with a gasoline can. She was later released on a promise to appear in court at a future date.
Teen Suspected of Orchestrating Arson Contracts
Later on Tuesday morning, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) announced a more complex and alarming arrest. A 15-year-old was taken into custody and is now under investigation for allegedly arranging arson-for-hire contracts targeting Montreal businesses. Investigators seized evidence related to the case. The minor was released as the police probe continues, with authorities indicating that further arrests and charges are being considered.
Police Issue Warnings to Parents and Businesses
In a public statement, the SPVM expressed serious concern over the situation. The force is increasing its outreach to parents and caregivers to mitigate the risk of young people being recruited for such illegal activities. "We recommend that parents and caregivers familiarize themselves with the platforms young people use, as well as the groups and channels to which they subscribe," the police advised.
The SPVM also issued a direct reminder to the business community, urging them to contact police immediately if they receive any threats. "Our teams, who have the required expertise, must be informed of your situation in order to assist you," the statement read, assuring that police presence remains active throughout the holiday season to prevent crime.
Anyone with information related to these incidents or similar threats is asked to contact 911, their local police station, or to file an anonymous report through Info-Crime Montréal at 514-393-1133 or online at infocrimemontreal.ca.
