Calgary police have launched an investigation into what they are calling the suspicious death of an elderly woman in the city's southwest community of Canyon Meadows.
Discovery and Initial Response
Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1300 block of Canterbury Gardens S.W. at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2026. The call was in response to reports of a deceased woman. Police have confirmed the victim was a woman in her 80s.
Investigation Deemed Suspicious
Authorities have not released the woman's identity or a potential cause of death. However, the Calgary Police Service has officially characterized the circumstances surrounding her death as suspicious. This classification typically indicates that investigators have reason to believe the death may not be due to natural causes.
To determine the exact manner and cause of death, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on Friday.
Ongoing Police Inquiry
The investigation is now in the hands of detectives from the CPS major crimes unit. As part of their evidence-gathering efforts, investigators are collecting closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding area. They are also actively appealing to the public for assistance.
