What started as a routine patrol for Central Alberta RCMP officers turned into one of their easiest arrests this week, thanks to a suspect who apparently needed some shut-eye.
Mounties from the Innisfail detachment were conducting patrols in the Bowden area when they made a startling discovery around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. A black 2023 Ford F-150 pickup truck, previously reported stolen from Red Deer, was parked and occupied by a man who was fast asleep behind the wheel.
Sleeping Suspect Makes Police Work Easy
The officers didn't need to engage in a high-speed chase or complex investigation. They simply approached the vehicle and took the sleeping 36-year-old man into custody without incident.
The suspect, whose identity hasn't been released by authorities, was apparently so comfortable in his stolen accommodations that he didn't notice the police presence until it was too late.
Multiple Charges Filed
Following the arrest, the Red Deer man now faces several serious charges including:
- Possession of property obtained by crime
- Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited
- Failure to comply with a release order
The recovered Ford F-150 has been returned to its rightful owner, providing some relief to the victim of this auto theft.
RCMP Remind Public About Vehicle Security
While this arrest ended favorably for law enforcement, Alberta RCMP continue to emphasize the importance of vehicle security. They recommend that drivers always lock their vehicles, never leave keys inside, and park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
The suspect remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing, likely wishing he had chosen a more discreet location for his nap.
