Spanish Prosecutors Halt Julio Iglesias Sex Assault Probe Citing Jurisdictional Limits

Spanish state prosecutors announced on Friday that they are shelving an initial investigation into accusations of sexual assault made against legendary singer Julio Iglesias. The decision comes after prosecutors concluded that Spain's National Court lacks the proper jurisdiction to judge the matter, which involves alleged incidents that reportedly occurred in the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.

Allegations and Initial Investigation

Earlier this month, Spanish prosecutors had opened an investigation into allegations that the 82-year-old Grammy-winning global singing star sexually assaulted two former employees at his residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. The two women, represented by the nongovernmental organization Women's Link Worldwide, presented a formal complaint to the Spanish court.

According to the organization, the women accused Iglesias of "crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity such as sexual harassment" and of "human trafficking for the purpose of forced labor and servitude." The complaint detailed additional allegations that Iglesias regularly checked their cellphones, barred them from leaving his house, and demanded they work up to 16 hours a day without contracts or days off.

Iglesias's Response and Legal Position

Julio Iglesias has vehemently denied all accusations. In a statement posted on social media, the singer expressed: "With deep sorrow, I respond to the accusations made by two people who previously worked at my home. I deny having abused, coerced or disrespected any woman. These accusations are absolutely false and cause me great sadness."

The jurisdictional issue became the central factor in the prosecutors' decision. Since the alleged crimes are said to have occurred outside Spanish territory, Spain's National Court determined it does not have legal authority to pursue the case. An email seeking comment sent to a Florida attorney whose website lists Iglesias as a client was not immediately answered.

International Dimensions and Career Context

When the complaint was initially filed in Spain, Women's Link Worldwide indicated they had not contacted authorities in the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic and were unaware whether investigations had begun in those Caribbean nations. This leaves open the possibility of legal proceedings in the countries where the alleged incidents occurred.

Julio Iglesias has been among the world's most successful singers for over five decades since his 1969 debut album "Yo Canto." He has sold more than 300 million records in more than a dozen languages and achieved immense popularity internationally, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s through collaborations with American artists including Willie Nelson and Diana Ross.

The singer's accolades include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 and a 1988 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Performance for his album "Un Hombre Solo." He is also known as the father of contemporary pop star Enrique Iglesias.

The shelving of this investigation marks a significant development in the case, though it does not necessarily preclude legal action in other jurisdictions where the alleged incidents may have taken place.
