Slain Windsor Teen Remembered as Fun and Full of Life

A Windsor teenager who was fatally stabbed last month is being remembered for his loyalty and magnetic personality. Shane Cushman, 16, died on April 26 following what police believe was a targeted attack in the 300 block of Tecumseh Road East.

An obituary for Cushman described him as the kind of person people were naturally drawn to: silly, fun, and full of life, with an infectious smile that could light up any room. He loved spending time with his friends, driving around listening to music, making videos, and creating memories out of the simplest moments. He was always twirling his curls, laughing, and bringing his own kind of energy wherever he went.

Creative and Unique Individual

Cushman was also creative in ways he may not always have admitted. He was talented in drawing, passionate about video games, always making some cool gadgets, and effortlessly expressive through his unique sense of fashion. He carried himself with individuality, heart, and a quiet artistry that made him unforgettable.

The obituary noted that a love of God was a meaningful part of who Cushman was. Though his time here was far too short, his laughter, love, loyalty, and unforgettable smile will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Investigation and Charges

Windsor police officers responded to a report of a person with a weapon shortly before 6 p.m. on April 26 and found Cushman suffering from a life-threatening stab wound. Officers immediately started life-saving measures, including CPR, and continued until paramedics arrived. The teen was then rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Within 15 minutes, police located and arrested Hatem Hameed, 18, and charged him with first-degree murder, uttering threats to cause death, and wearing a face mask in the commission of an offence. Investigators later told reporters they believe the incident was targeted.

Police are also investigating pellet gun holes found in the windows of a home on April 27 in the 1500 block of Goyeau Street, the same block where Hameed was arrested the day before. Police have said they are working to determine whether the shooting is connected to the homicide investigation.

“At this time, we can confirm that the investigation is ongoing,” Gary Francoeur, director of corporate communications for the Windsor Police Service, said in an email to the Star on Wednesday (May 6). “As the matter remains active, we’re not in a position to provide further details.”

Community Support

A private funeral service has taken place. Donations to a GoFundMe page created to raise money for funeral costs would be appreciated by the family tremendously, the obituary said. So far, the fundraiser has received more than $32,000 since the night of April 27.

Cushman is survived by his parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, two younger siblings, and several aunts and uncles.
