A Calgary court has scheduled a sentencing hearing for June 2024 for the second of two brothers convicted in the fatal stabbing of a teenager at a Copperfield basketball court.
Sentencing Hearing Set for June
Crown and defence lawyers appeared in Calgary Court of King’s Bench on Friday, December 5, 2025, to set the date. The full-day hearing for sentencing submissions is now scheduled for June 11, 2024. The offender, now 20 years old, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on October 31, 2025, for his role in the death of 18-year-old Danillo Canales Glenn.
The Fatal Attack in Copperfield
The tragic incident occurred on September 5, 2023, on the padded surface of an outdoor hockey rink in the southeast Calgary community of Copperfield. Canales Glenn was playing basketball with two friends when the two brothers jumped the boards surrounding the rink and approached the trio.
According to an agreed statement of facts, the victim asked the brothers "what they were looking at" before the attack. One brother then pepper-sprayed Canales Glenn while the other stabbed him. The facts state the older brother used the pepper spray and the younger sibling, who was 16 at the time, inflicted the fatal stab wound.
Legal Proceedings and Delays
The younger brother, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was sentenced in October 2025 to an additional year in custody, on top of more than two years already served. Because of the protection afforded to his younger brother, the older sibling also cannot be named publicly.
During Friday's appearance, defence lawyer Andrea Urquhart told Justice Lisa Silver that a court-ordered psychological assessment for her client is not yet complete and is not expected until March 2024. Scheduling conflicts for both the defence and Crown prosecutor Vicki Faulkner contributed to the June date.
The offender remains free on bail pending his sentencing hearing next year.
