Saskatchewan Police Watchdog Launches Investigation into In-Custody Death
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been activated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man during an RCMP emergency response on Onion Lake Cree Nation. The incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, 2024, prompting immediate notification to the province's independent police oversight body as required by legislation.
Emergency Response to Armed Confinement Report
According to an RCMP news release, the situation began at 8:20 a.m. when Onion Lake RCMP received a report that a woman was being forcibly confined in a rural residence by a man armed with a firearm. The location was approximately four kilometres west of the Saskatchewan-Alberta border, necessitating cooperation between provincial oversight teams.
"Onion Lake RCMP officers and the Saskatchewan RCMP Critical Incident Response Team responded immediately to contain the residence," stated the official release. "Crisis negotiators communicated with the man for several hours while the female occupant was able to exit the premises safely."
Fatal Outcome After Police Entry
At 3:20 p.m., after extensive negotiations, police entered the residence where they discovered the man with injuries. Officers provided initial medical assistance, but emergency medical services personnel later pronounced the man dead at the scene. The RCMP confirmed that three firearms were recovered from the residence but emphasized there was no indication that officers discharged their weapons during the response.
The Mounties have stated that no further information about the incident or those involved is currently available, citing the ongoing investigation. Public inquiries are being directed to SIRT, with updates promised as the investigation progresses.
