RCMP In-Custody Death Probed by Sask. Police Watchdog

Saskatchewan's police watchdog is investigating the death of an individual who died while in RCMP custody in Fort Qu'Appelle. The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) confirmed it has been called in to probe the circumstances surrounding the death, which occurred on July 7, 2026.

Details of the Incident

The RCMP reported that officers were called to a disturbance in Fort Qu'Appelle around 10 a.m. on July 7. Upon arrival, they took a person into custody. Shortly after, the individual was found unresponsive in a cell. Emergency medical services were called, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

SIRT, which investigates serious incidents involving police in Saskatchewan, has taken over the investigation. The team will determine if the use of force or any police actions contributed to the death. The RCMP has cooperated with the watchdog, providing initial reports and securing the scene.

Context and Previous Cases

This is not the first in-custody death in Saskatchewan. In 2025, SIRT investigated three similar cases, including one in Regina where a 35-year-old man died after being restrained by police. In another case in Saskatoon, a 42-year-old woman died shortly after arrest, with the cause later determined to be a pre-existing medical condition.

The watchdog's investigations typically take several months, with a public report issued at the conclusion. SIRT has the authority to recommend charges if evidence of criminal wrongdoing is found.

Community and Official Reactions

Local Indigenous leaders have called for transparency in the investigation. "We need to ensure that all deaths in custody are fully investigated and that families get answers," said a spokesperson for the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations. The RCMP has expressed condolences to the family and said it will fully cooperate with SIRT.

The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
