A private funeral service will take place next week for Constable Marc Pinizzotto, the Toronto Police officer killed while serving a search warrant in North York. The service is scheduled for June 24 at 1 p.m. at the Toronto Congress Centre on Dixon Road in Etobicoke. It will be closed to the public, with attendance limited to family, police members, and emergency personnel.
Funeral Details and Public Support
The Toronto Police Service expressed gratitude for public condolences but confirmed the funeral is not open to the general public. The procession route from Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home in Thornhill to the Toronto Congress Centre, along with broadcast information, will be released in the coming days. Private visitations will also occur before the funeral.
Pinizzotto, 43, a member of the Emergency Task Force, was fatally shot on June 11 while assisting in a search warrant related to shootings at the U.S. Consulate and local synagogues. The incident occurred at an apartment complex near Black Creek and Trethewey Drives. He was pronounced dead at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre despite medical efforts.
Investigation and Charges
Nicholas Bennett, 19, was shot during the exchange and is expected to face a first-degree murder charge. Police Chief Myron Demkiw described the case as complex and vowed accountability. Pinizzotto leaves behind his wife, Andrea, and twin children, Daniella and Dominic.
His death follows that of OPP Constable Tarun Bali, who was killed in northern Ontario. Bali’s funeral will be held Thursday at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre. Both officers’ deaths have sparked community support, with proposals to rename parks in their honor. Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish will move to rename Indian Gate Park after Pinizzotto, while Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown plans to consult Bali’s family on a suitable tribute.
