Peel Regional Police are in mourning following the death of Kylo, a seven-year-old Belgian shepherd who served as an active service dog. Kylo passed away over the weekend after a battle with cancer, leaving a void in the force and among his colleagues.
Dedicated Service and Key Contributions
Kylo was bred in the Netherlands and began his service with Peel Regional Police in January 2019, working alongside his handler, Constable Mario Pittarelli. Trained as a general service dog with additional skills in narcotics detection, Kylo played a crucial role in thousands of calls and numerous investigations throughout his career.
His work led to over 100 arrests, including significant operations at Toronto Pearson International Airport in collaboration with the Canada Border Services Agency and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Kylo also contributed to auto theft and organized crime investigations in the region, showcasing his versatility and dedication.
Remembered for Friendliness and Enthusiasm
Known affectionately as one of the friendliest police dogs in the service, Kylo brought unmatched energy to his duties. Whether searching for narcotics or playing with his favorite ball, his enthusiasm was a constant source of inspiration. Police described his passing as a significant loss to the service, his handler, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
In a tribute on their website, Peel Police highlighted Kylo's strong drive and approachable temperament, which made him not only an exceptional working dog but also a beloved member of the policing community. His loyalty and contributions to public safety will be deeply missed.
Notable Incident and Legacy
One notable incident involved Kylo tracking a suspect without incident after a driver allegedly attempted to drive toward officers during an investigation in Mississauga in October 2020. His swift action ensured no injuries occurred, demonstrating his effectiveness in high-pressure situations.
As Peel Police cope with this loss, Kylo's legacy of dedication and service continues to resonate within the force and beyond, reminding all of the vital role that service dogs play in law enforcement and community safety.
