Ottawa Hit-and-Run Suspect to Enter Plea in Crossing Guard Death Case
The 19-year-old man accused in a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a Barrhaven crossing guard in March has waived his right to a bail hearing and is expected to enter a plea later this month, according to reports from the Ottawa Citizen.
Court Proceedings and Adjournment
Xzander Wright appeared briefly in court on Tuesday morning for a bail hearing, but the case was adjourned until April 28. Entering a plea will initiate the formal trial process, where Wright will be informed of the charges against him and must enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.
Wright faces charges of failure to stop after an accident causing death. The incident occurred on Monday, March 23, at approximately 8:20 a.m. at the intersection of Cedarview Road and Kennevale Drive, near Mary Honeywell Elementary School.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The victim, 55-year-old Peter Clark, was struck by a vehicle and later died from his injuries after being transported to the hospital. Police initially described the fleeing vehicle as a dark-coloured pickup truck.
On Tuesday, March 24, multiple police cruisers were observed outside a residence in the area, just steps away from the school. A black Toyota Tundra with a "HAIL SATAN" decal across the windshield was parked in the driveway. Authorities later confirmed that this truck was connected to the hit-and-run investigation.
Additional Legal Challenges for the Accused
In addition to the hit-and-run charges, Wright is also facing impaired driving charges in Brockville. He pleaded not guilty to those charges on Friday, March 27, and that matter is scheduled to go to trial later this year.
The case has drawn significant attention in the Ottawa community, highlighting concerns about road safety and justice for victims of such tragic events. The adjournment of the bail hearing sets the stage for the next critical phase in the legal proceedings as the community awaits further developments.
