Man Accused of Trying to Hit Saskatoon Police with Stolen Car

A 31-year-old man, who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breaching his statutory release, has been arrested in Saskatoon following a dangerous incident where he allegedly attempted to hit police officers with a stolen vehicle. The arrest occurred this week, stemming from events that unfolded on the evening of April 20.

Police Attempt to Stop Vehicle at Intersection

Saskatoon police reported in a news release that they attempted to stop the vehicle driven by the suspect at the intersection of 21st Street West and Avenue P South around 10:30 p.m. on Monday night. Simultaneously, officers observed another vehicle nearby with a falsely displayed license plate, heightening suspicions in the area.

Drivers Refuse to Stop, Leading to Chase

Both drivers refused to comply with police orders to stop, eventually heading in separate directions. One vehicle, which was later determined to have been stolen from Yorkton, came to a halt near 17th Street West and Avenue H South in the Riversdale neighborhood after driving through a spike belt deployed by authorities.

However, the situation escalated when the vehicle was put into reverse and accelerated toward police officers, nearly striking them and a patrol vehicle, according to the release. The driver then continued to evade capture at high speeds, at times driving into oncoming traffic and attempting to make contact with patrol vehicles, creating a perilous scenario for law enforcement and the public.

Resistance and Assault During Arrest

Once the stolen vehicle was finally stopped, police said the driver resisted arrest and assaulted an officer. The other vehicle involved, stolen from a business in the 800 block of 43rd Street East, was later found abandoned and running in the 200 block of Avenue N South, adding to the complexity of the investigation.

Multiple Charges Filed Against Suspect

The 31-year-old driver of the Yorkton vehicle now faces a series of serious charges, including:

  • Four counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
  • Assaulting a peace officer
  • Dangerous driving
  • Evading police
  • Possessing stolen property over $5,000
  • Possessing ammunition contrary to a prohibition order

This incident underscores the risks faced by police officers in the line of duty and highlights ongoing efforts to address vehicle theft and violent crime in Saskatoon. The arrest brings a close to a tense pursuit that endangered multiple lives and disrupted community safety.
