ALERT Announces Lethbridge's Largest Ever Fentanyl Bust

Police have announced the largest fentanyl seizure in Lethbridge's history, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against opioid trafficking in southern Alberta. The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams, in collaboration with Lethbridge police, executed a major operation that resulted in the confiscation of a substantial quantity of the deadly drug.

Record-Breaking Seizure Details

On March 19, law enforcement officials seized just over 2.25 kilograms of fentanyl, with an estimated street value of $450,000. This massive haul represents the single largest fentanyl bust ever recorded in Lethbridge, surpassing previous records and demonstrating the scale of the opioid crisis facing the community.

According to police estimates, the amount of fentanyl seized would be enough to create approximately 22,000 individual doses if sold on the streets. This staggering number highlights the potential impact this seizure will have on reducing drug availability and related harm in the region.

Operation and Arrest

The drugs were discovered during a search of a residence in Lethbridge's Victoria Park neighbourhood, conducted by ALERT's organized crime team. The location is situated near Chinook Regional Hospital and a local middle school, raising concerns about the proximity of drug operations to sensitive community areas.

In addition to the fentanyl, authorities recovered over $8,000 in cash and 14 cartons of contraband cigarettes during the search. These findings suggest a broader pattern of illicit activity beyond just drug trafficking.

ALERT arrested 49-year-old Sherry Hopkins in connection with the seizure. Hopkins faces multiple charges including possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of more than 2,000 cigarettes, and breach of a release order. She remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.

Previous History and Context

This arrest is not Hopkins' first encounter with law enforcement regarding major drug seizures. According to ALERT, Hopkins was violating two previous court-ordered release conditions connected to other significant drug busts in Lethbridge. In July 2025, she was found in possession of 1,137 grams of fentanyl, indicating a pattern of involvement in the drug trade.

Before this month's record-breaking seizure, the largest fentanyl bust in Lethbridge occurred in December 2022, when 1.6 kilograms was seized as part of a million-dollar drug operation. In that case, the accused received a 12-year prison sentence that began in February 2025, illustrating the serious consequences facing those involved in large-scale drug trafficking.

Official Statement and Commitment

"Fentanyl remains a top priority for ALERT," said ALERT Staff Sgt. Trevor Sheppard in a Tuesday statement. "A record seizure like this showcases our commitment to public safety and we will continue to aggressively target offenders who poison our community."

This statement underscores the ongoing dedication of law enforcement agencies to combat the fentanyl crisis that has devastated communities across Alberta and beyond. The record-breaking nature of this seizure serves as both a warning to traffickers and a reassurance to residents that authorities are actively working to remove dangerous drugs from the streets.

The operation represents a coordinated effort between multiple law enforcement agencies working together to address organized crime and drug trafficking in the region. As the investigation continues, authorities are likely to pursue additional leads and connections that may emerge from this significant bust.
