Lethbridge Gymnastics Coach Acquitted of Sexual Abuse Charges After Four-Year Legal Battle
In a significant legal development, a Lethbridge gymnastics coach has been cleared of all sexual abuse allegations involving five young female athletes, bringing an end to a four-year ordeal that his lawyer described as devastating.
Coach Maintained Innocence Throughout Proceedings
Defence counsel Kirsten Lancee stated that Jamie Ellacott consistently maintained his innocence from the beginning, emphasizing that the nature of gymnastics coaching often involves physical contact for spotting purposes. "He's been standing before the court on these charges for four years, devastating to him," Lancee said following Ellacott's acquittal on Tuesday.
The lawyer explained that Ellacott's defence centered on his professional responsibilities in what she described as "a very athletically challenging sport" where physical contact is sometimes unavoidable during training sessions.
Charges Stemmed from Multiple Allegations
Ellacott was initially charged in July 2022 with sexually abusing a seven-year-old girl during a session at the Lethbridge Gymnastics Academy. Following this initial charge, allegations emerged from four additional young athletes, leading to multiple charges of sexual interference.
However, Court of King's Bench Justice Johnna Kubik acquitted Ellacott of all charges, finding issues with the testimony of each complainant. The judge noted the possibility of inadvertent collusion between two of the girls as one factor in her decision.
Judge Found Coach Credible
Lancee revealed that Justice Kubik found Ellacott to be a credible witness during the proceedings. "His defence was that he was acting in his professional context," the lawyer emphasized, adding that while "physical touching is required for this kind of a sport ... he did not engage in any unlawful touching."
The acquittal allows Ellacott to move forward with his life after what his lawyer described as an incredibly difficult period. "He's relieved that it's over and he can start his life over again," Lancee stated, expressing her own relief for her client. "I'm just so pleased for him."
The case highlights the complex nature of coaching in sports that require physical contact for safety and training purposes, while underscoring the importance of thorough judicial examination of allegations in such sensitive matters.
