Laval Father Testifies About Tensions Before Children's Deaths

Laval Father Details Marital Strife and Financial Burden in Murder Trial Testimony

During his ongoing murder trial at the Laval courthouse, Kamaljit Arora provided detailed testimony about the escalating tensions within his marriage and significant financial pressures in the years leading up to the tragic deaths of his two children. The 49-year-old defendant faces first-degree murder charges for the drowning deaths of his 11-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter in October 2022.

Financial Strain Reaches Critical Point

Arora revealed during cross-examination by Crown prosecutor Claudia Carbonneau that he had lent substantial amounts of money to his wife's relatives, with the total debt eventually reaching $80,000 including accumulated interest by 2022. This financial burden became a significant source of frustration for Arora, who testified that he never received repayment from any of the relatives despite the substantial sums involved.

"I never got anything in return from anybody," Arora stated during Wednesday's proceedings. He further explained that the financial pressure became so severe that he had to borrow $70,000 from his father in India to purchase the family home in Laval, where the tragic events would unfold just months later.

Family Interference and Marital Discord

The testimony highlighted growing tensions between Arora and his wife, Rama Rani Arora, particularly concerning the influence of relatives on their family life. Arora expressed frustration with what he described as excessive interference from a specific relative on his wife's side of the family.

"He was having too much interference in our family matters," Arora testified. "(My wife) was calling him for everything. He was convincing my wife of everything."

When questioned by prosecutor Carbonneau, Arora acknowledged that he had previously told police investigators that if this relative had not been present in their lives, "maybe everything would have been different." However, he was careful to clarify during his testimony that he does not blame his wife for what ultimately occurred.

Depression and Substance Use

Arora's testimony also addressed his mental health struggles leading up to the tragedy. He described suffering from depression between 2020 and 2022, with symptoms worsening after the family briefly moved to Winnipeg before returning to Laval. During this period, Arora attempted suicide multiple times.

Regarding the day of the children's deaths, Arora testified that he had consumed fentanyl while at work and could not recall subsequent events. "I was suicidal and consumed fentanyl while at work that day, and cannot recall what happened next," he stated, adding that he woke up in handcuffs nearly two weeks later in a hospital.

Additional Charges and Trial Details

Beyond the first-degree murder charges for his two younger children, Arora also faces charges for:

  • Planning the attempted murder of his older daughter Jasmine
  • Assaulting his wife by strangulation

The alleged crimes all occurred on October 17, 2022, inside the family's Laval home. A publication ban protects the identities of the deceased children, though through written admissions presented to the jury, Kamaljit Arora has acknowledged killing them and that they died from drowning.

The trial continues to unfold with further testimony expected to examine the complex family dynamics and circumstances that preceded this devastating tragedy.
