The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent involved in a deadly shooting in Minneapolis this week has been publicly identified by his family as a decorated war veteran, a dedicated father, and a devout Christian.

The agent is 43-year-old Jonathan Ross. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Federal officials allege that Ross shot and killed Renee Nicole Good after she attempted to run him over with her vehicle. The shooting has ignited significant controversy and sparked protests against ICE across the United States.

In the aftermath, Ross's father, Ed Ross, spoke to the Daily Mail, offering a personal defense of his son's character. "You would never find a nicer, kinder person," Ed Ross stated. He described Jonathan as a "committed, conservative Christian" and a "tremendous" father and husband. "I couldn't be more proud of him," the elder Ross added.
According to the family's account, Jonathan Ross is an Iraq War veteran. He married his Filipino wife in 2012, and her parents are doctors living in the Philippines. Ed Ross confirmed his daughter-in-law is an American citizen but did not specify her length of residence in the country.
Career and Previous Dangerous Encounter
Reports indicate Ross has served as an ICE agent since approximately 2013 and is based full-time in Minneapolis. He is a member of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Special Response Team, a specially trained tactical unit.
This is not Ross's first dangerous encounter on the job. In June of last year, during a traffic stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, he was reportedly dragged by a vehicle. The incident involved Roberto Carlos Munoz, who refused to exit his car. Agent Ross broke the rear driver's side window, and his arm became trapped between the seat and the car frame as Munoz sped away. Ross was dragged for 91 metres and hospitalized with arm and hand injuries requiring 33 stitches.
The fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good remains under investigation, with Ross's family portraying him as a man of faith and service, while the event fuels ongoing national debates over immigration enforcement and use of force.
