Husband Detained Following Wife's Mysterious Overboard Incident in Bahamas
A Michigan man who reported his wife fell from their boat into Bahamian waters over the weekend has been taken into custody as authorities investigate the suspicious disappearance.
Arrest Made in Connection with Disappearance
Brian Hooker, 59, was arrested on Wednesday evening in Marsh Harbour, a town in the Abaco Islands, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. The arrest comes days after Hooker claimed his 55-year-old wife, Lynette Hooker, fell from their eight-foot dinghy during a ride from Hope Town to Elbow Cay on Saturday night.
Hooker's attorney, Terrel A. Butler, confirmed the arrest in a statement to NBC News, stating his client "categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing" regarding allegations made by Lynette's daughter, Karli Aylesworth.
Family Raises Suspicious About Incident
Aylesworth has publicly questioned her stepfather's account of events, telling various media outlets that it doesn't "make any sense" that her mother would "just fall" overboard. The daughter demanded a "thorough investigation" into her mother's disappearance.
"I don't understand how she got the key," Aylesworth told CBS News, referring to Brian's claim that Lynette had the boat keys when she went overboard, causing the dinghy's engine to shut off. "Brian's always driving. So he basically is in charge of the key. So the fact that my mom had it doesn't make any sense."
Contradictory Accounts and Ongoing Search
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Brian Hooker wrote that he is "heartbroken" that his "beloved Lynette" fell overboard, blaming "unpredictable seas and high winds." He claimed he "lost sight of her" when strong currents carried her away and that despite "desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart."
However, local authorities emphasized on Tuesday that efforts to find Lynette were not a "recovery operation," suggesting they maintain hope she might still be alive. The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed opening a criminal investigation into the disappearance.
Experienced Sailors with Decade of Experience
The Michigan couple are experienced on the water and have been sailing for more than a decade, according to Aylesworth. Photos shared on social media show the couple on various sailing adventures, including a January 2023 voyage and a recent trip on a small boat in January of this year.
Butler's statement on behalf of Brian Hooker emphasized that his client "has been cooperating with the relevant authorities as part of an ongoing investigation" and that there would be no further comments at this time.
The case has drawn attention to similar maritime incidents, including recent overboard cases involving cruise ship passengers and fishing vessel crew members, though authorities have not indicated any connection between these events.
