Police Respond to Gunfire Near Detention Centre
The Montreal police service launched an investigation after reports of possible gunshots near the Rivière-des-Prairies detention centre on Saturday afternoon. The incident prompted a significant deployment of police vehicles to the area around Armand-Chaput Ave. in the Rivière-des-Prairies—Pointe-aux-Trembles borough.
Firearm Discovered, Possible Organized Crime Link
According to police spokesperson Manuel Couture, the incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday. A subsequent search of the nearby woods led to a critical discovery. Investigators located a firearm and shell casings, though no bullet impacts were found and no suspects have been arrested.
Media reports indicate a potentially significant detail: the gunshots were heard at the same time that members of the prominent Rizzuto organization were in a courtyard of the detention centre.
Car Fire and Ongoing Investigation
In a separate but potentially related incident, a 911 call was made at about 2:10 p.m. concerning a vehicle on fire nearby at the intersection of Gouin Blvd. and Trefflé-Berthiaume St. The vehicle sustained considerable damage and was towed away for a detailed examination.
Spokesperson Couture stated that an investigation will determine if the two events are connected. An increased police presence will be maintained in the area as the inquiry continues.
