Florida Nurse Murder Case: Co-Worker Charged in 2024 Slaying After Secret Affair
A tragic case of passion turned deadly has culminated in criminal charges, as Rene Perez faces first-degree murder allegations for the 2024 killing of his co-worker and secret lover, Linda Campitelli. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest on March 10, following an extensive investigation that spanned over eighteen months.
The Ill-Fated Relationship
Linda Campitelli, a 35-year-old nurse described by family as "bold, sassy and fun", and Rene Perez, 38, were both married when they began a clandestine affair while working at Wellington Regional Medical Center in Florida. For approximately two years, they engaged in what authorities characterize as a "torrid sexual relationship" kept hidden from their spouses.
Text messages between the pair revealed frequent discussions about Campitelli's frustration with sharing Perez with his wife. The relationship ultimately imploded, setting the stage for tragedy.
The Fatal Birthday Encounter
On October 28, 2024, the couple planned a secret birthday celebration for Campitelli. Perez arranged what appeared to be a romantic encounter in the back of a Chevy Tahoe SUV, complete with a blanket bearing birthday wishes and medical sheets designed to control odor and moisture.
Campitelli had expressed apprehension about the meeting, messaging Perez the previous day: "I LOVE YOU, I FEEL KINDA WEIRD. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT TOMORROW." She left home wearing a red dress and black stiletto heels, telling her husband she was having dinner with friends.
The Crime Scene Investigation
Campitelli's body was discovered around 10:20 p.m., approximately fifty feet from her vehicle near the Retina Group of Florida Building in Wellington. Forensic evidence indicated she had been dragged from the SUV, with scuff marks and road rash on her body, and her heels worn down from the dragging.
Inside the vehicle, investigators found blood stains on the rear driver's side door, and Campitelli's Apple Watch was soaked in blood. Surveillance footage captured Perez walking toward his workplace at Delray Medical Center, where he disposed of an unidentified object in the trash.
The Investigation and Arrest
Detectives conducted a painstaking investigation that included:
- More than fifty search warrants
- Extensive cellphone data analysis
- Countless interviews with witnesses and associates
- Forensic examination of digital communications
Initially, Perez claimed he had skipped the birthday meeting because his son was ill. However, the text message evidence and surveillance footage contradicted his account. He was finally arrested in Miami and faces charges of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.
Family Reactions and Legal Proceedings
Campitelli's mother, Edina Russo, expressed mixed emotions about the arrest. "There's a million emotions. I'm obviously always sad but there's a sense of closure," she told reporters. "I had no idea any of this was going on. She and her husband were in marriage counselling."
Russo acknowledged her daughter's marital difficulties but emphasized: "What she did was awful ... but my daughter didn't kill anyone." She added, "What kind of human does that? Animals don't even do that."
Perez has been ordered held without bond at the Palm Beach County Jail. If convicted, he faces either life imprisonment or the death penalty under Florida law.
The case highlights how secret relationships can escalate into violence, with Campitelli's obituary remembering her as a dedicated nurse who "doted on her husband and girls" and was looking forward to starting a new job that would never materialize.
