The Edmonton Police Service has launched a homicide investigation following the discovery of a deceased man in a north Edmonton home, marking the city's first suspicious death case of the new year.
Discovery During Welfare Check
Police were called to conduct a welfare check at a residence in the area of 88 Street and 128 Avenue in northeast Edmonton at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026. Upon arrival, officers found a 51-year-old male deceased inside the home.
Homicide Section Takes Lead
The EPS Homicide Section has taken over the investigation, treating the case as a suspicious death. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. This incident represents the first such investigation opened by Edmonton police in 2026.
The discovery comes in the wake of a violent previous year for the city. Edmonton police recorded 30 homicides in 2025, a number that was later adjusted to 31 to include the death of an armed suspect who was shot by police after entering a west Edmonton backyard and pointing a gun at a resident in April of that year.
Appeal for Public Assistance
Investigators are now seeking help from the public. They are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Edmonton Police Service. Witnesses can call the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
