‘Limebank Raceway’ Strikes Again: Driver Nabbed at Blistering 213 km/h

Ottawa police have reeled in what can only be described as an exceptionally fast catch, underscoring the dangerous reputation of a particular stretch of Limebank Road. The incident, which unfolded on a Monday afternoon, saw a traffic officer witness a vehicle moving at a speed so excessive it more than doubled the legal limit.

A Startling Traffic Stop

According to an official news release from the Ottawa Police Service dated November 26, the event occurred around 3:00 p.m. An officer from the Traffic Escort and Enforcement Unit was conducting routine enforcement on Limebank Road when they observed a low-slung black car travelling at an astonishing 213 km/h. The posted speed limit for that roadway is just 80 km/h, meaning the driver was caught going 133 km/h over the legal maximum.

The officer managed to safely pull the vehicle over. During the subsequent interaction, it was revealed that the driver was a 22-year-old man who formerly lived in Ottawa and was merely visiting at the time. The situation escalated significantly when the police discovered the individual had several outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Serious Charges and Consequences

The young man was immediately placed under arrest and held for a bail hearing. He now faces severe legal repercussions, including a charge for dangerous operation of a vehicle under the Criminal Code and a charge for stunt driving under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

The immediate penalties were swift and severe: his driver's licence was suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle he was driving—a rental—was impounded for 14 days. While police did not officially name the car model, metadata from a photo released by the service identified it as a 'Black Mercedes,' appearing to be a sedan.

If convicted, the driver could face a future filled with even harsher penalties. These include a potential fine of between $2,000 and $10,000, a further licence suspension ranging from one to three years, and the possibility of up to six months in jail.

This dramatic incident provides a stark answer to anyone questioning why this arrow-straight section of Limebank Road in Gloucester is colloquially dubbed 'Limebank Raceway' by both law enforcement and the street racing community. While police did not confirm if this particular speed is a record for the city, it stands as a chilling example of extreme and reckless driving on Ottawa's streets.
