Pennsylvania Father Injured by Homemade Pipe Bomb Meant for Party Entertainment
A Pennsylvania father's attempt to entertain party guests ended in serious injury when a homemade pipe bomb he constructed accidentally detonated. Travis Lee Peachey, 51, of Narvon, suffered shrapnel wounds to his face and head after the explosive went off in his backyard, according to reports from Lancaster County Fox affiliate WPMT.
Investigation and Incident Details
Pennsylvania state troopers initiated an investigation after Peachey arrived at a local hospital seeking treatment for his injuries. Investigators revealed that Peachey had assembled the homemade explosive with the intention of using it as entertainment for expected guests, as reported by Harrisburg CBS affiliate WHP-TV. He allegedly placed the device on a woodpile near a shed in his backyard.
After learning that his guests would not be arriving, Peachey attempted to retrieve the explosive and return it to his shed. However, he dropped the device, causing it to detonate unexpectedly. Despite the blast, Peachey managed to run into his home and inform his wife that he needed immediate medical attention, according to WGAL-TV.
Medical Treatment and Legal Consequences
Peachey received treatment for injuries to his face and eyes, and shrapnel was removed from his head for evidence purposes. Fortunately, no one else was injured in the incident. Following the investigation, officers arrested Peachey and charged him with multiple offenses, including:
- Two counts of endangering the welfare of children
- Risking catastrophe
- Possession of an explosive
- Three counts of attempted aggravated assault
- Three counts of recklessly endangering another person
A jail employee confirmed to HuffPost that Peachey remains in custody, held on a $500,000 bail. This incident highlights the dangers of homemade explosives and the severe legal repercussions associated with such actions.
