Essex County Residents Targeted in Crown Attorney Phone Scam, OPP Warns

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have issued a critical alert to residents of Essex County regarding an ongoing and sophisticated phone scam. In this fraudulent scheme, individuals are impersonating officials from the Crown Attorney's office to deceive victims into handing over money.

How the Scam Operates

According to police reports, victims receive unsolicited phone calls from scammers who falsely claim to be Crown attorneys or investigators collaborating with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. These callers often manipulate caller ID systems to display what appears to be legitimate phone numbers, and they may even use the real names of actual Crown attorneys to enhance their credibility.

The scammers typically assert that the recipient is a victim of identity theft, creating a sense of urgency by demanding immediate action to "verify" their identity or "protect" their funds. Victims are then instructed to withdraw cash and deposit it into so-called "government-approved ATMs," which are often cryptocurrency machines or designated drop boxes.

Official Warnings and Precautions

Police emphasize that legitimate members of the Crown Attorney's office and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre will never contact individuals to request payments, cash withdrawals, Bitcoin transactions, QR code scans, or deposits into drop boxes. Once money is deposited into Bitcoin machines, recovery is extremely difficult, if not impossible, authorities noted in a recent news release.

To protect themselves, residents are advised to:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, or emails, and not rely solely on caller ID, as it can be easily spoofed.
  • Avoid using phone numbers, websites, links, or QR codes provided by unknown callers.
  • Verify any suspicious information independently through trusted, official sources.

Reporting and Assistance

If you believe you have been contacted or victimized by this scam, contact the OPP at any time by calling 1-888-310-1122, or dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency. For those wishing to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or an anonymous online tip can be submitted at catchcrooks.com, where informants may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

This warning comes as part of broader efforts by law enforcement to combat fraud and protect community members from financial exploitation. Residents are urged to stay informed and share this information to help prevent further victimization.
