Surrey police are investigating yet another apparent extortion-related shooting, this time targeting a business in the Cloverdale area. The incident occurred overnight, continuing a troubling trend of violence in the region.
Overnight Attack on Langley Bypass
A business located in the 19300-block of Langley Bypass was struck by gunfire at some point during the night. The business owner discovered the damage and reported it to Surrey police around 8 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2026.
Authorities confirmed that the business was closed at the time of the shooting. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the attack. The Surrey RCMP support unit has now taken charge of the investigation.
Police Confirm Extortion Link
In a statement, Surrey police Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton indicated that the shooting is believed to be connected to extortion. "At this early stage, it is believed to be extortion-related," Houghton said.
This incident is not isolated. It represents at least the fourth separate extortion-related shooting reported in the Surrey area since New Year's Eve. The recent wave of violence has put local business owners and the community on high alert.
A Pattern of Violence
The Cloverdale shooting follows a deadly incident just days earlier. On Tuesday, January 13, prominent businessman Baljinder (Binder) Singh Garcha was found shot to death in the 3500-block of 176th Street in South Surrey. While investigators have not yet publicly confirmed a link between Garcha's killing and extortion, the timing and nature of the crimes have raised significant concerns.
Police are urging anyone with information about the latest Cloverdale shooting to come forward. They are particularly interested in:
- CCTV footage from the area.
- Dashcam video from drivers who were near the 19300-block of Langley Bypass overnight.
- Any other relevant information from the public.
