Former Calgary Teacher Confronts New Sexual Assault Allegation Dating Back Four Decades

An 81-year-old former Calgary teacher is now facing a fresh sexual assault allegation that originates from the mid-1980s, adding to his existing legal troubles. Court documents reveal that Fred Henry Archer was arrested on December 2, 2025, in connection with accusations of abusing a male student between September 1, 1985, and February 28, 1986.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Historical Context

Archer, who previously worked as a guidance counsellor at Springbank Middle School, is scheduled to appear at the Cochrane Court of Justice on February 3, 2026. According to RCMP Corporal Gina Slaney, the allegations involve incidents at the school during the 1980s, with the initial police report filed on February 26, 2025.

This new charge comes as Archer is already set to stand trial at the end of August 2026 on five separate counts. Those charges allege he molested two boys at John Ware School between June 1, 1994, and September 30, 1995.

Defense Response and Class Action Settlement

Archer's lawyer, Timothy Dunlap, stated on Thursday that his client vehemently denies all allegations of sexual abuse. "He's preparing to fight them," Dunlap said regarding the most recent accusations.

Dunlap also highlighted what he called "the significant thing" - a recently settled civil lawsuit. On December 12, 2025, the Calgary Board of Education and their insurers received court approval to pay $15.77 million in compensation as part of a class action lawsuit. This lawsuit was filed on behalf of students allegedly abused by Archer and the late Michael Gregory.

The defense lawyer expressed concerns about potential motivations behind the allegations, stating: "It would be very interesting to me to find out when these people came forward and if they came forward when the conversation was becoming more public about the fact that there was going to be an awful lot of money on the table for anyone who came forward and made allegations like this."

Extended Deadline for Claims and Previous Conviction

The deadline for individuals who were sexually abused at John Ware School as part of the Calgary Board of Education class action lawsuit has been extended to February 26, 2026, from the original January 26 deadline. Anyone who believes they were victimized by Gregory or Archer has until that date to make a claim to class counsel David Corrigan or Meaghan Potier.

Archer has a previous conviction related to similar allegations. In 2009, he received a conditional sentence and house arrest after admitting to molesting three boys at Springbank Middle School during the 1980s and early 1990s. The Alberta Court of Appeal later increased this sentence to three years in a federal penitentiary.

Despite the new allegations and his legal history, Archer remains at liberty pending resolution of the current charges against him.
