Calgary Police Seize Over $36,000 in Drugs During Traffic Stop Near Chinook Station

Calgary police have made a significant drug bust following a routine traffic stop last week, resulting in the seizure of narcotics with an estimated street value exceeding $36,000. The incident unfolded near the Chinook LRT station, where officers apprehended a suspect after he attempted to discard evidence from his vehicle.

Traffic Stop Leads to Major Drug Discovery

On Thursday, February 12, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a Calgary Police Service officer was conducting patrols in the vicinity of the Chinook LRT station. The officer's attention was drawn to a 2003 Toyota 4Runner due to an obscured license plate, prompting the initiation of a traffic stop.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver was observed throwing an item out of the window. The discarded item, identified as a white shopping bag, was immediately recovered by law enforcement. Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain 250.6 grams of a substance suspected to be cocaine, with an approximate street value of $25,060.

Additional Contraband Uncovered During Search

Following the initial discovery, the driver was placed under arrest, and a thorough search of both the individual and his vehicle was conducted. During this search, police uncovered an additional 112.5 grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl, with an estimated street value of $11,270. The combined value of the seized drugs totals $36,330, marking a substantial interception of illicit substances.

The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Leslie Ross Szentmiklossy, now faces serious charges in connection with the incident. He has been charged with one count of possession of opioids for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Szentmiklossy is scheduled to appear in court on February 25, 2026, to answer to these allegations.

Police Emphasize Vigilance in Community Patrols

This case highlights the effectiveness of proactive policing and the importance of community vigilance in combating drug-related crimes. The Calgary Police Service has reiterated its commitment to addressing the distribution of dangerous substances within the city, emphasizing that such enforcement actions are crucial for public safety.

The seizure of both cocaine and fentanyl is particularly significant given the ongoing concerns about the opioid crisis and the risks associated with these drugs. Authorities continue to urge residents to report any suspicious activities, as collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community are essential in maintaining a safe environment.
