A Calgary family is urgently seeking answers and justice after their adult daughter was brutally attacked while visiting relatives in the United Kingdom, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. The incident has reignited fears about alcohol-fueled violence in Britain, a concern that originally prompted the family to emigrate to Canada over a decade ago.
Violent Assault During Family Visit
Keeley Hethershaw, a 22-year-old from Calgary, was visiting her aunt and cousins in Berwick, England, when she became an innocent victim of a violent pub brawl on February 21, 2026. According to her father, Lee Hethershaw, Keeley had stepped outside briefly when she was suddenly pushed to the ground by another woman during the altercation.
"She hit her head on the curb, which fractured her skull in two places, resulting in a blood clot in her brain," Lee Hethershaw explained, his voice filled with anguish. "What happened to her is actually my worst fear. I left England for their safety, and then this happens. It's just my worst nightmare realized."
Severe Injuries and Emergency Surgery
The attack left Keeley with two skull fractures and severe bruising and swelling in her brain, requiring immediate emergency neurosurgery. Medical complications have continued to plague her recovery, including a dangerously low red blood cell count that necessitated two blood transfusions.
"It's just been like a bad dream ever since," Lee said, noting that Keeley's mother has flown to the U.K. to be at her daughter's bedside, while other family members have maintained a constant vigil at the hospital.
Family's History with U.K. Violence
Lee Hethershaw, who immigrated to Canada from England twelve years ago with his wife and two daughters, cited escalating alcohol-related violence as a primary reason for their relocation. "It's a pretty dangerous country, actually," he stated bluntly. "Growing up there, every week there's fights in the town. If a fight breaks out, it can turn into other fights... It just turns into a bloody riot."
The father expressed particular frustration that the attack occurred less than twenty-four hours after Keeley's arrival in the country. "It's the culture over there to just drink as much as you can," he lamented. "It's just binge-drinking culture, which gets the violence with it. Alcohol is a terrible thing."
Police Investigation and Arrests
Local authorities have arrested three individuals—a woman and two men—in connection with the violent incident, and the investigation remains ongoing. While Lee acknowledged that police enforcement after such incidents is strong, he questioned why more isn't done to prevent the violence initially.
"The police do enforce it strongly, so that's the good thing," he noted. "It's just a shame they don't prevent it in the beginning."
Road to Recovery
Despite the severity of her injuries, Keeley has shown remarkable resilience and determination. Her father reported that Friday morning marked the first time he was able to speak with her since the attack, describing the conversation as deeply emotional.
"She's so determined to get better, and she's also angry it happened," Lee shared. "Obviously, she's very confused. She's in a lot of pain."
Remarkably, Keeley's personality has shone through even during this traumatic ordeal. Before undergoing emergency surgery, she expressed concern about how much hair would be shaved off—a moment her father described as "typical Keeley" that gave the family hope during their darkest hours.
"We're very optimistic about full recovery," Lee stated with cautious hope, though the family continues to grapple with the emotional and physical aftermath of the violent attack that has left them questioning the safety of their homeland.
